Cost £27m, now worth 92% less: Moshiri made a major mistake over £69k-p/w Everton flop - opinion

Farhad Moshiri is renowned for his reckless spending after signing over 40 players in his six years in charge so far, with absolutely no return from his efforts as Everton are currently 16th in the Premier League teetering on the edge of a relegation battle.

The Toffees owner has spent over £600m trying to patch up the problems at Goodison Park, but has failed time and time again, which has also reflected in the managerial position at the club, with Frank Lampard becoming the sixth permanent manager in six years.

When it comes to current players who have not been worth the money spent on them, Cenk Tosun ranks highly as one of the biggest flops still at the club, and signing the Turkish centre forward is definitely one of Moshiri’s worst decisions to date.

Tosun was bought by the club for £27m in a move from Besiktas in 2018, and now over three years on, the player has failed to make any impact on the side worthy of price tag.

Offering just 61 appearances, 11 goals and six assists during that time, the £69k-p/w flop has seen his market value decrease rapidly and the 30-year-old is now worth 92% less than what the club paid, at £2.25m according to Transfermarkt.

On top of the striker’s lack of contribution over the years and the hefty price that Everton paid for it, he will now be eligible to leave on a free transfer after Everton failed to secure a January exit amid interest from his former club Besiktas, and he is now linked with a move to Al-Hilal.

This season, even with injuries to both Dominic Calvert Lewin and Richarlison on multiple occasions so far, Tosun has still failed to make more than one appearance in the Premier League, proving further that his services are not deemed as valuable to the club.
