Five of the most memorable Hull City opening day fixtures including against the odds historic win

With Hull City set to find out who they will be kicking off their season against in two days' time following Thursday's fixture release, we decided to take a look back at five of the club's most memorable opening-day contests, starting with one that should not take too long to retrieve from the memory bank...

Sometimes, you just peak too early and that was certainly true of Hull City last season. In the midst of 2021/22's underwhelming final finish of 19th, it is easy to forget how promisingly life had began back in the Championship for Grant McCann's Tigers.

The 4-1 triumph at Preston would represent City's biggest margin of victory all season and also matched the best opening-day scoreline of any team in the club's 118-year history. Early on, the initial exchanges at Deepdale offered little indication of what the afternoon had in store as the Lilywhites forged into an eighth-minute lead courtesy of Emil Riis Jakobsen's instinctive finish following some static visitors' defending.

But the hosts then appeared to be unsettled by a concussion to goalkeeper Declan Rudd that led to his substitution and Keane Lewis-Potter subsequently demonstrated the pace that would make him a season-long thorn in the side of countless Championship sides by latching on to a Richie Smallwood flick to level in the 35th minute. Just past the hour, Smallwood then netted with a deflected edge-of-the-box effort and Lewis-Potter went on deliver the 85th-minute cross for Josh Magennis to make it 3-1.
