Five Manchester United transfer options for new-look midfield as Sir Jim Ratcliffe plots rebuild

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has revealed his plans to knock Manchester City and Liverpool 'off their perch'. However, Manchester United won't reclaim their title as one of the fiercest teams in Europe overnight – instead, Erik ten Hag will have to slowly, but astutely, rebuild his squad.

Last month, the Red Devils boss outlined his desire to sign a new striker, but Financial Fair Play rules stopped the club from splashing the cash in January. Since pleading with the board to further bolster his frontline, Rasmus Hojlund has struck an excellent vein of form, scoring seven goals in his last six Premier League outings.

With the 21-year-old striker firing on all cylinders, Ten Hag may be inclined to divert his attention to the middle of the park. Especially with Sofyan Amrabat set to return to Fiorentina following the expiration of his loan and Casemiro often struggling to impress this term.

So, with that being said, the Manchester Evening News has taken a look at who Ten Hag could sign in the summer to strengthen his midfield options.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana was tentatively linked with making the switch to Manchester United last summer, although a move failed to materialise. The Belgium international has been a bright spark in a difficult season so far for his club, and with more FFP charges having been laid down things could feasibly still get even worse.
