Five Man City players with a point to prove on international duty

Pep Guardiola had one clear message for his Manchester City players as they begin international duty this week: don't get injured.

It's a familiar instruction, and one that Guardiola often worries about as City cannot control the fitness of their players when they are away on international duty. City have at least 14 games left this season, which will rise to 18 if they get to two finals, and Guardiola will need all of his players at the top of their possible fitness levels if the Blues are to win a treble.

Guardiola will also hope for some of his out-of-form players to use the two international fixtures to get some much-needed minutes and play their way back into form and boost his selection options when the domestic fixtures resume.

Among those players are five in particular who will be looking to play for their countries and get some rhythm back into their performances:

Laporte has started just seven of the last 21 City games, and of those four have come in the FA Cup or Carabao Cup. Only three of the last 13 Premier League games since the World Cup and in total has only started half of the 28 games he has been available for this season. Now away with Spain, Laporte could really benefit from two starts against Erling Haaland's Norway and then Scotland to remind Pep Guardiola of his defensive abilities.

Guardiola appears to favour Ruben Dias, John Stones and Manuel Akanji ahead of Laporte at present, so the centre-back will probably welcome the chance to play back-to-back starts for only the second time since the World Cup.
