First Division wrap: Waterford held, Galway United hit six

SSE Airtrictiy Men's First Division champions Galway United continued their title celebrations on Friday night, with a 6-0 hammering of Athlone Town at Eamon Deacy Park.

The Tribesmen came flying out of the blocks, with Darren Clarke's second-minute strike being followed up by a Stephen Walsh goal just two minutes later.

Robert Manley made it 3-0 on 11 minutes, before Vincent Borden added a fourth just after the break. Clarke and Manley both scored again to ensure that Galway's long goodbye to the second tier continues in style.

Elsewhere, second-placed Waterford played out a 0-0 draw at home to Wexford in the south-east derby, while Bray Wanderers kept their slim play-off hopes alive with a 3-1 victory at home to Cobh Ramblers.

The Cork side came into the game on the back of four successive victories but that record looked under threat when Chris Lyons headed the hosts in front on 27 minutes.

Conor Knight added a second for the Seagulls 12 minutes later, and that would be enough to seal the win, with Cobh failing to hit back until Justin Eguaibor scored a consolation deep into second-half injury time.

Basement side Kerry FC had brief hopes of earning just their second win of the season, when Ryan Kelliher gave them the lead after 47 minutes away at Finn Harps.

The home side equalised through BJ Banda just three minutes later, before a Noe Baba goal on the hour ensured that all three points remained in Ballybofey.

The fourth-to-last round of fixtures of the season will be completed on Saturday evening, when Longford Town host Treaty United, with both sides clinging on to faint play-off hopes.
