Fire service issue update on blaze at Manchester Airport 'meet and greet' car park

Firefighters have issued an update after a number of cars were damaged in a blaze at a 'meet and greet' car park near Manchester Airport. As the Manchester Evening News reported, witnesses said they saw flames '10-12ft in the air' after the fire broke out at the car park in Styal on Saturday afternoon.

In a statement a spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said a crew from Wilmslow was called to the scene on Moss Lane at about 12.30pm after a rubbish fire spread to nearby cars. They added: "A small rubbish fire spread to cause heat damage to cars nearby.

"The fire covered approximately 10 metres by 10 metres and was put out by firefighters using a hose reel jet. They then dampened the surrounding area down."

One witness said he'd been told three vehicles had caught fire. A passing motorist said the fire initially appeared 'out of control'.

He added: "There were large flames, about 10-12ft in the air. The fire seemed to be in the middle of the compound.

"It looked like it was out of control. Shortly afterwards the fire service turned up and they spent a while on site subduing it."
