Faversham Town manager Steve Watt eyes best of both worlds as club keep first two clean sheets of the season ahead of FA Trophy tie at Flackwell Heath

Boss Steve Watt is eager for Faversham Town to keep more clean sheets - but without losing their goal-scoring prowess.

There had been plenty of entertainment for the Lilywhites’ fans in the first three fixtures of the season as they netted 10 goals - but conceded six.

It meant last weekend’s goalless FA Cup preliminary round tie at Bedfont was in contrast to what it had followed.

The two teams met again in the replay, with the game finishing 4-0 at Salters Lane in midweek, as attacking midfielder Kane Haysman bagged a first-half treble. Striker Ibrahim Olutade was also on the scoresheet after the break.

On the importance of No.1 Tom Hadler’s first clean sheet of the campaign, Watt said: “Tom is a very confident lad but it’s not just Tom.

“Harry Hudson, who had missed our first three games, was back on Saturday. If you had said to me ‘What’s your starting back three?’then that would’ve been it.

“I know Brad [Simms] had a niggle but at least we could pick our best back three. Tom hasn’t had a lot to do.

“Everything he has done, he has done it really well. It’s been more silly mistakes that have cost us.

“We will pride ourselves on clean sheets - but without taking away anything, going forwards. If you keep a clean sheet, nine times out of 10, you will win games of football.

“That’s something we have got to strive to do more of this season.”

The match was played in tough conditions on a grass pitch amid an unusually hot summer.

But Watt said: “It was difficult conditions for both sides.

“We didn’t perform how we are capable of playing, although you have got to give credit to Bedfont. They played the conditions and the pitch well.

“We didn’t adapt well enough so they fully deserved a draw. I think a draw was the fair result
