Family's emotional tribute after 'devoted' dad dies in tragic incident

The family of a man who was found dead at home have paid an emotional tribute to him.

Stephen Hughes died following an incident at a property on May Walk in Partington on Sunday, July 23. Emergency services, including police officers and fire crews, were called but the 44-year-old was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

At the time of the incident, some neighbours on May Walk were told to flee their homes following a test for carbon monoxide. Cadent Gas later confirmed that gas mains and service pipes 'did not cause or contribute' to the incident.

Stephen's death is not being treated as suspicious, Greater Manchester Police said. In a tribute issued today (August 30), his sister Sharron described him as a 'devoted father'.

She said: "Stephen was a devoted father, loving brother and son, and he will be missed by everyone that knew him."

Following the incident, a Cadent spokesperson said: "Cadent supported the multi-agency response to the in incident in May Walk, as the gas emergency service provider for the area. We made sure everything associated with Cadent’s gas network was safe.

"We’ve carried out a thorough check of the gas mains and service pipes in the area and we can confirm they are sound and did not cause or contribute to this incident. We now leave the scene in the hands of the lead agencies, as they continue their work to establish what happened.

"Cadent provides a 24-hour, 365-day gas emergency response service. If you ever smell gas, call the national gas emergency service, immediately, on 0800 111 999, day or night. All calls are recorded and may be monitored."
