Extra-time goal settles League Cup final as Ramsgate edged by Isthmian Premier rivals Wingate & Finchley
Ramsgate suffered extra-time heartbreak in the League Cup final on Wednesday night.
The Rams lost 1-0 to Isthmian Premier rivals Wingate & Finchley in the final at Aveley FC.
Lee Martin’s side, backed by hundreds of travelling fans, had a goal controversially ruled out early in the first half.
They thought they’d gone in front in just the eighth minute when TJ Jadama finished a corner from Alfie Paxman at the far post but it was ruled out for a foul on Wingate goalkeeper Charlie Grainger.
If Grainger was fortunate there, his luck held again when he appeared to get away with handling outside his area.
Kweku Lucan was denied by Grainger in a one-on-one, with Greg Cundle’s follow-up deflected wide, as Ramsgate - looking to lift the trophy for the first time since 2008 - threatened again.
On-loan Charlton defender Mason Hunter had an effort cleared off the line in the second half.
But Wingate might have won it in added time at the end of 90 minutes as Loic Hernandez forced an excellent save from Dillon Addai.
The only goal came in the second period of extra time, with Afi Adebayo firing home in the 110th minute.
Ramsgate, 10th in the Isthmian Premier, return to league action with a home against lowly Hashtag United on Saturday (3pm).
