Expert shares 'secret' to keeping Mother's Day flowers fresh for longer

It seems no matter which flowers you buy they annoyingly don't seem to stay fresh for long. And with millions of bouquets handed over to loved ones over the weekend for Mother's Day many will now start being put in the bin.

But it turns out there is a trick you can follow which will make them last even longer, according to one expert, reports the Express. Amy Greenshields, who is a flower gifting expert at Card Factory, says it all depends on where you keep them overnight.

She explained: "When looking to keep cut flowers fresh, we all know that it's important to regularly change their water, keep vases clean, feed them every few days and regularly remove any dead stems - but the make or break factor to how long your blooms will stay looking fresh all comes down to where you keep them in your home."

Amy says the "secret" to keeping your flowers looking fresh for longer it is all to do with the 'slowing down the ageing process.'

She continued: "One easy way to do this is by keeping your flowers at a cool temperature. Cooler temperatures slow down the metabolic processes that contribute to the ageing of flowers, as well as reducing their rate of water loss - vital for keeping them looking fresher for longer.

"If you're looking to maximise the vase life of your flowers, try keeping them in your garage overnight - or, if space allows, your fridge. The cold temperatures will help your flowers to maintain their vibrant colours and structural integrity for a longer time."

Amy also suggested you keep flowers away from direct sunlight, heat sources and fruit to help them last longer.
