Covid Inquiry Wales Live: Minister messaged to say 'we're all f*cked'

Welsh Government minister Eluned Morgan texted a colleague to say "we're all f*cked" as she attended a meeting about Covid in the summer of 2020.

The message was read to the Covid Inquiry sitting in Cardiff as it scrutinises the Welsh response to the pandemic. You can follow updates live below.

Ms Morgan said her message was sent after she learned that there were discussions taking place about allowing visitors from France and the United States to come to the UK, despite concerns about both outbreaks and certificate fraud in those countries. She apologised to the inquiry for her "fruity language" saying her husband was a priest and she would be in trouble at home.

The inquiry also heard that during a later Covid wave she messaged Northern Ireland's health minister to say "we are doomed". Ms Morgan said that was after the Welsh Government had learned about the Omicron variant.

Ms Morgan also faced questions about why she had deleted WhatsApp messages. She said she could not remember why or when she had deleted the messages.

Several Welsh ministers will face questions about their handling of the pandemic in Wales at the Covid-19 inquiry today. As well as Ms Morgan, Finance minister Rebecca Evans and Education minister and leadership hopeful Jeremy Miles will also be questioned at the inquiry in Llanedeyrn, Cardiff on Tuesday.

It comes after Mr Miles' counterpart in the Welsh leadership contest - which is set to conclude this week - Vaughan Gething gave evidence to the inquiry on Monday, during which he admitted he was "embarrassed" he was not able to hand any WhatsApp or text messages from his spell as health minister. You can read full updates from Monday's session here.
