Expansion issues causing Manchester United to consider relocating from Carrington training complex

Manchester United are open to relocating from their Carrington training complex due to the logistical issues of expanding the site.

High-level club sources say United are constrained by the narrow country lane on Birch Road, as well as the cables on the approach to the training complex.

United have explored the possibility of buying nearby farming land but would potentially encounter issues with building football pitches on soil used for food production.

On the existing site, United do not want to expand onto any of the pitches as they intend to prioritise the football.

Informal discussions have been held by senior figures at United over a potential move away from their training complex for the last 24 years since 2022.

United spent £9.1million last year on enhancing facilities for the women's team and the academy while there were refurbishments of the swimming pool and canteen for the first team the previous year.

Senior club figures visited Leicester City's immaculate Seagrave training complex that opened in 2021 and were bowled over by the infrastructure. Its designer, Mags Mernagh, is now the director of infrastructure at United and overseeing the enhancements at Carrington.

United relocated to Carrington from The Cliff in January 2000, having bought the land in 1996, but there has been scant improvement to the facilities under the ownership of the Glazer family.
