EXCLUSIVE: James Vaughan explains Everton hope for Lewis Warrington after transfer reality
A 'surreal moment' is how Lewis Warrington described making his Everton debut, but this significant occasion will not have come as a surprise for many.
The boyhood Blue has been at the club since the age of six, gradually moving his way up the age categories before experiencing a change of scenery last season at Tranmere Rovers. Warrington joined the League Two side on loan during the January transfer window and became an instant hit among supporters due to his expansive style of play and tenacity.
Former Everton striker James Vaughan, who is now the sporting director at Tranmere, was the figure behind the temporary switch after watching the youngster at under-23s level and left convinced both parties would reap the rewards of such a move.
Speaking exclusively to the ECHO in March to address this deal, Vaughan said: "The things that we could tell Lewis about how we had seen him play, how he would fit in and be successful was important for him to hear. I’ve been there myself as a young kid, you get sent on loan because someone recommends you rather than a manager and the club in question actually wanting you as a player."
The 19-year-old certainly made an impact during his time at Prenton Park, with one of his standout displays arriving in a 3-2 home win over Mansfield Town in which he assisted two goals, leaving the Super White Army somewhat resigned to the fact a return to the fourth tier in 2022/23 appeared increasingly unlikely.
Out of contract at Goodison Park at the end of last campaign, Everton and Warrington agreed on a new two-year deal and the teenager was recently met with more good news after being included in the club's 32-man pre-season squad travelling to the United States.
