Ex-Sunderland skipper George Honeyman set to leave Hull City to join Championship rivals

Former Sunderland skipper George Honeyman is on the move - with the midfielder set to leave Hull City to join Championship rivals Millwall. The 27-year-old's contract at Hull was due to expire this summer but the Tigers activated an option to extend his stay by a further 12 months, however they have been unable to agree terms on a new long-term deal.

Honeyman has reportedly turned down two improved offers, and rather than allow him to leave for nothing next summer Hull have decided to accept a nominal fee and allow him to move on now. He is expected to travel to London today to undergo a medical and finalise his move to Gary Rowett's side, before linking up with the Lions for their pre-season training camp in Ireland.

Honeyman is a graduate of the Black Cats' academy system and made his senior debut for the club in February 2015, went on to play a handfulf of Premier League games in the relegation season of 2016-17, and became a regular the following season as the Wearsiders dropped out of the Championship. He was appointed as captain by then-manager Jack Ross in 2018 as Sunderland lost in the League One play-off final at Wembley, and also lost in the EFL Trophy final.

Honeyman left Sunderland to join Hull in the summer of 2019, leaving Wearside having made 97 appearances and scored 15 goals in all competitions. At Hull, he made 127 appearances in all competitions and scored 10 goals.
