Ex-Motherwell star drafted in to Scotland squad for France friendly

Former Motherwell defender Max Johnston has been drafted into Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad for their friendly against World Cup finalists France tomorrow.

The friendly in Lille is Scotland’s first game since qualifying for Euro 2024 in Germany, courtesy of Spain’s win over Norway on Sunday.

Talented right-back Johnston, 19, who was SFWA Young Player of the Year last season, sealed a four-year deal at Austrian Bundesliga side Sturm Graz in July, after turning down a new contract at Fir Park.

Johnston has been brought into the squad following the withdrawal of Andy Robertson due to a shoulder injury sustained in the 2-0 defeat in Spain last Thursday, while Aaron Hickey has also dropped out.

The teenager was with Scotland’s under-21s, and set up a goal in their 3-1 win over Hungary at Fir Park on Friday night, before being sent off in stoppage time.

Johnston would have been suspended for their match against Malta on Tuesday.
