Ex-Manchester United youngster hospitalised as game stopped for 34 minutes
Former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes has been hospitalised following a severe head injury sustained while playing for French side Lille.
The 23-year-old was contesting an aerial ball when he collided with Reims defender Amadou Kone, resulting in Kone's dismissal from the game.
Lille's squad formed a protective circle around the former United prodigy as fans from both sides chanted his name for a full 10 minutes. Gomes was subsequently stretchered off and transported by ambulance.
Lille have confirmed he has since regained consciousness and all their thoughts are with their midfielder.

An additional 34 minutes were added to the first half, with the scoreline remaining at 0-0. The match against Reims marked the start of Gomes' fourth season in Ligue 1 with Lille.
After being released by United in 2020, Gomes joined the French club before spending a season on loan in Portugal with Boavista. Despite being hailed as one of the most promising talents of this century by United's academy staff, he struggled to secure a regular spot at the senior level.
Last summer, he clinched the under-21 European Championship with England, delivering standout performances in midfield under new interim Three Lions boss Lee Carsley.
Gomes provided the joint most assists in Ligue 1 last season and has cemented himself as a key player in France.
This is a developing story and the Manchester Evening News will bring you all of the latest updates as soon as possible.
