Ex-Bury FC player suspended after FA betting charge against him

An ex-Bury FC player has been suspended by his current club after an alleged breach of the Football Association's betting rules. Chris Maguire made 24 appearances for the Shakers during the 2017/18 season, scoring twice. He had arrived at Gigg Lane in July 2017 on a free transfer from Oxford United.

The 33-year-old who is now with Lincoln City, is alleged to have placed 52 bets on football matches between March 2017 and February 2022, and has now been charged with misconduct by the FA. He has been given until August 30th to respond to the charges.

The period of Maguire’s alleged offending includes time spent at his former clubs Oxford United, Bury and Sunderland. He made 125 appearances for the Wearside team, scoring 28 goals.

Maguire, who has two Scottish caps, and in an attacking midfielder, began his career with Aberdeen, but has also played for Kilmarnock; Derby County; Portsmouth; Sheffield Wednesday, Coventry, and Rotherham.

A statement from the FA on Monday afternoon said: "Chris Maguire has been charged with misconduct in relation to an alleged breach of the FA's betting rules.

“It is alleged that the Lincoln City FC forward breached FA Rule E8 by placing 52 bets on football matches between 17 March 2017 and 12 February 2022. Chris Maguire has until Tuesday August 30 to provide a response."

In a statement of their own, Lincoln City said: "Chris has been suspended by Lincoln City without prejudice until further notice."
