Everton want to secure 'early' deal for £50k-a-week star at Goodison Park

Everton need to establish the ‘ambitions’ and ‘intentions’ of midfielder Alex Iwobi, after it emerged the Toffees intend to open talks over a new contract at Goodison Park, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The former Arsenal man has been handed a fresh lease of life under Frank Lampard this season and is impressing in his new role on the blue half of Merseyside.

The 26-year-old scored his first goal of the season on Sunday night as he fired the Toffees into the lead against Manchester United with a stunning strike.

Although Lampard’s side went on to lose the match 2-1, it marked a continuation of Iwobi’s impressive form, having also contributed three assists this season and played every minute of each top-flight game.

During Premier League TV’s coverage of the game, Owen Hargreaves piled praise on the £34 million man, describing him as ‘fantastic’ in his new midfield role.

According to Football Insider, Everton have now opened preliminary talks over a new contract for Iwobi at Goodison Park, with his current £50,000 per-week deal set to expire in the summer of 2024.

Jones is not surprised that Everton have decided to open talks with one of Lampard’s star players.

The journalist adds that the club need to discover what Iwobi’s ambitions are with discussions an inevitability given his current form.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “It's no surprise really that Everton now want to make the early move to talk about his future. If nothing else, they need to discover what his ambitions are, what are his intentions before this current deal starts to tick down? I think this is definitely something that was going to come on to the horizon very soon and Everton would love to tie Iwobi down, I'm sure.”
