Everton must use untapped source of goals for Premier League survival

Goals have been hard to come by for Everton - particularly in the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin for so much of the season.

Since the international break, as the threat of relegation has intensified, the Blues have managed just five goals from five games. Two of those were penalties from Richarlison in the defeat at Burnley. The others were Richarlison's stoppage time equaliser against Leicester City, Anthony Gordon's strike against Manchester United and Mason Holgate's half volley at West Ham. All three were deflected.

As Everton head into the final six games of the season with their Premier League status under threat, finding a new source of goals is crucial. From Turf Moor to Anfield, they have created chances but converting them has proved difficult.

With Calvert-Lewin's fitness struggles continuing - it is unclear whether he will be available against Chelsea - Frank Lampard has few options short of calling on his players to be more ruthless in front of goal. One area where improvements could be attained, however, is set pieces. Everton have posed limited threat from corners and attacking free kicks so far this season.

Before Lampard's arrival in January, Jarrad Branthwaite's equaliser from a Gordon free kick against Chelsea and Richarlison's overhead kick from a recycled corner against Norwich were the only Premier League goals Everton had registered from attacking set pieces. In contrast, they had conceded seven goals direct from corners by that time. One of Josh King's strikes for Watford in his Goodison Park hat-trick also came from a free kick near the corner flag.
