Everton: Lampard plan involving Duncan Ferguson 'hasn't worked'

Part of the reason new Everton manager Frank Lampard kept Duncan Ferguson on his coach staff was to get striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin performing ‘at his best’, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The legendary figure has been part of the backroom staff at Goodison Park since 2014 following a three-year stint as the club’s Under-18’s assistant manager.

It’s been an extremely difficult season for everyone associated with Everton despite their fast start under former manager Rafa Benitez.

Under the Spanish tactician’s tutelage, the Toffees lost just one of their opening seven Premier League games, sparking hope of a genuine push for European football.

However, Benitez was relieved of his duties in January following a run of one win of 13 top-flight fixtures, with Lampard coming in as his successor soon after.

And the ex-Chelsea boss outlined the importance of having Ferguson on his coaching staff during his first press conference since taking charge of the club.

“He’s a club legend,” said Lampard. “He’s a person the players’ respect, the club respect, the fans respect, and I can only help myself from tapping into his experience and knowledge.”

But Everton are yet to experience a significant change in fortunes under the new regime and are currently hovering just one place above the relegation zone.

Jones has revealed that getting Calvert-Lewin back on top form was behind Lampard’s thinking when retaining Ferguson’s expertise.
