Euro 2024 wrap: Ukraine leapfrog Italy, Hungary must wait

England rubber-stamped their qualification for Euro 2024 and left reigning champions Italy waiting to secure their spot in Germany.

England gained a measure of revenge for their defeat by Italy in the Euro 2020 final with a 3-1 victory at Wembley.

Gianluca Scamacca fired the Italians into the lead with his first international goal, but Harry Kane equalised from the penalty spot.

Marcus Rashford's solo effort put England ahead and Kane raced through to hit the third with his 61st goal for his country.

Ukraine moved above Italy into second spot in Group C after coming from behind to win in Malta.

Paul Mbong gave minnows Malta a shock lead with only their second goal of the qualifying campaign.

But a comical own goal from Ryan Camenzuli hauled Ukraine level before Artem Dovbyk’s penalty and a late strike from Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk secured a 3-1 victory.

Hungary would have joined England in securing qualification but were held to a 2-2 draw in Lithuania.

They remain top of Group G, with Serbia a point behind in second after a 3-1 win over neighbours Montenegro, who are five points further back in third.

Slovenia and Denmark secured wins to consolidate their places at the top of Group H.

Adam Cerin’s fifth-minute free-kick was enough to beat Northern Ireland 1-0, while the Danes edged to a 2-1 win in San Marino thanks to goals from Rasmus Hojlund and Yussuf Poulsen.

Kazakhstan, four points behind in third, kept their slim hopes alive with a 2-1 win in Finland.
