Man United assigned VAR official from Liverpool controversy as Evans makes retirement admission

Manchester United's international players are nearly ready to return to Carrington following the latest international break.

The VAR assistant who was stood down following the controversial Tottenham vs Liverpool match will return to action this weekend for United's trip to Sheffield United.

Daniel Cook, along with VAR Darren England, were stood down when Liverpool forward Luis Diaz's non-goal was incorrectly ruled out for offside in Tottenham's 2-1 home victory. Miscommunication between England and referee Simon Hooper saw Diaz's goal being wrongly ruled out in what referees' chief Howard Webb labelled 'a clear error'.

Jonny Evans contemplated retirement while he was struggling with injury in his final months with Leicester City, but hopes those problems are behind him while he's in 'a good place' representing United once again.

Evans' contract expired at Leicester this summer, at which time he was welcomed back to Carrington in order to train and maintain his fitness while the Northern Ireland international - now 35 - considered his next steps.
