Erik ten Hag transfer decision could hand Harry Kane perfect Manchester United shirt number

England captain Harry Kane could grab a sentimental shirt number at Manchester United should he complete his proposed blockbuster move to Old Trafford this summer.

Speculation over Kane and his Tottenham future continues to mount after the north Londoners were dumped out of the Champions League on Wednesday night. It means they can no longer win a trophy this season while Kane only has little over a year left to run on his contract.

Kane has made no secret of his desire to win silverware in an impressive individual career that has seen him score more goals than any other player in Tottenham's history. He surpassed the late, great Jimmy Greaves back in January and has totted up 268 goals in 423 appearances for Spurs.

Despite his goalscoring heroics, the 29-year-old has yet to get his hands on any trophy for club or country and United have identified him as their prime target for the summer transfer window. Erik ten Hag wants two major recruits when the market reopens - including the Tottenham frontman.

Whether or not that comes off depends on several factors, including where Kane sees his domestic future and Tottenham playing ball with another Premier League team in the first place. Although his transfer fee would be significant, the fact he's approaching the final year of his deal will almost certainly take the edge off.

German heavyweights Bayern Munich are also understood to be lurking. United, though, are the only realistic domestic option with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool off the table.
