Erik ten Hag told why he is ‘forced’ to start Scott McTominay for Manchester United vs Sheff Utd

Premier League winner Tim Sherwood says Scott McTominay has given Erik ten Hag no excuse for benching him against Sheffield United after his late double against Brentford.

The midfielder was the hero of Old Trafford last time out and has since seen national team Scotland qualify for Euro 2024, in part thanks to his six goals during qualifying. McTominay is considered low down in the Manchester United midfield pecking order but could get minutes against the Premier League’s bottom club with Casemiro out injured.

Sherwood believes the academy graduate deserves a starting spot against the Blades this weekend, claiming he has more internal drive to succeed for the club having come through the youth ranks.

Speaking to Sky Sports about McTominay, the former Blackburn star said: “He has to start today. He has forced the manager’s arm. He’s come off that bench with the attitude he showed, the desire to want to turn this game around.

“You’re not getting this from anyone who has been brought to the club. You’re only getting this from the academy onto the field.

“He needs a run of games. The manager wants to pick the superstars. He’s spent an awful lot of money. We can talk about the Glazers, Man United have continually spent money.”

Sherwood added: “And when they’re celebrating over two injury time goals against Brentford - with respect - it is not good enough. The manager has to take some responsibility for the performances of that team. He’s done well last season, he’s taking them back this season. The best players are the ones coming off the bench.”
