Erik ten Hag threatens to prove Liverpool legend right after Man United collapse

Erik ten Hag is no stranger to pressure at Manchester United after having had his job under threat for almost the entirety of last season.

That speculation did not immediately disappear, even in the aftermath of the Dutchman masterminding United's famous FA Cup win over Manchester City in May. Ten Hag had to wait for several weeks for a decision with the club's hierarchy talking to potential replacements.

It wasn't until June 24, some 17 days after the cup final on May 25 that club sources confirmed Ten Hag would remain in post. The former Ajax boss went on to sign a contract extension until 2026 but his authority had been diminished.

And further confidence in Ten Hag will have been eroded by United's start to the season. The Reds had to start 2024/25 well but they have lost two of their first three matches.

Ten Hag's situation at Old Trafford was compared to that of former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers by Jamie Carragher in the buildup to Sunday's game against Carragher's old club. The Welshman came under pressure on Merseyside but was given the start of 2015/16 before being sacked in October that season for Jurgen Klopp.

“For Rodgers, it proved a stay of execution," Carragher wrote in his Telegraph column. "He could not survive the next poor sequence of results as those pushing for change felt it was a matter of when, not if, he was replaced as soon as the ideal candidate became available – as Jurgen Klopp did during the international break in October 2015.
