Why Erik ten Hag has made eight changes to Manchester United starting line-up vs Barnsley

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has made eight changes to his starting line-up for tonight's clash with Barnsley because of the congested fixture list.

Only Diogo Dalot, Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford remain from the team that started Saturday's 3-0 win over Southampton.

Ten Hag has handed a full debut to deadline day recruit Manuel Ugarte, who stepped off the bench in the second half at St Mary's, and has included Toby Collyer in the starting line-up for the very first time.

Tonight's match marks the first of six fixtures United will play in the next 20 days ahead of the October international break.

"We have to rotate because we have loads of games and we have to manage the squad," Ten Hag told Sky Sports. "You need everyone; you can't talk about a starting 11 players.

"You have to give all the players in the squad game time if they are available."

On the importance of having competition for places, the Dutchman continued: "We need all the players in the squad, we are in five leagues [competitions]. We want to win but there is internal competition.

"We have to find out what is the best team, what is the best chemistry and this is a moment for some players to prove a point."

On Ugarte's inclusion, Ten Hag added: "We want to integrate him as soon as possible into the team, but that takes time. We only had one training [session] with him, two partial training [sessions], what can you expect?

"But now we have put him straight in. He has to progress, he has to develop and we have to give him and his teammates time to get used to each other."
