Erik ten Hag tells Antony what he must do to earn Manchester United start

Erik ten Hag reiterated players will start for Manchester United through good training, form and attitude.

Antony has been restricted to one cameo appearance - as an 89th minute substitute at Brighton - this term and he did not start in any of the club's five pre-season friendlies. The winger was due to make a late appearance in the 3-0 win at Southampton on Saturday but Matthijs de Ligt had to come off with cramp, so Casemiro was sent on instead.

United signed Antony, 24, from Ajax for a fee rising to €100million in 2022 but the Brazilian has managed only 11 goals in 83 appearances and lost his place in the side last season. Fellow left-footed right winger Amad has enjoyed a fine calendar year and was named the United player of the month for August before his instrumental role in the victory at Southampton.

Wingers Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford have also got on the scoresheet this term and Ten Hag did not confirm whether Antony would start against League One Barnsley in the League Cup on Tuesday night.

"Tomorrow you will see what the line-up will be," Ten Hag said. "We have training every day and the players have to earn the right to play.

"When players are doing the right things in training, when the attitude is good and they show performance in training then they will earn the right to play."

Antony took a leave of absence last September to address allegations of domestic abuse. The Brazilian police investigation concluded last month without any charges brought.
