Erik ten Hag set to offer Mason Mount Manchester United hint ahead of new season

Manchester United look set to hand a debut to Mason Mount on Wednesday as the Reds begin their pre-season schedule.

United are in Norway to take on rivals Leeds United in their first summer fixture. Erik ten Hag will be without a number of established senior players with several who have been on international duty not making the trip.

But one player who will be involved is new signing Mason Mount who has joined from Chelsea for an initial £55million. At this stage he remains the only Old Trafford arrival but goalkeeper Andre Onana looks set to follow him through the arrivals door as the Reds close in on a deal for the Cameroon international.

More new faces are expected but for now, Mount will have star billing for the United fans making the journey to Scandinavia. He’s been handed the coveted number seven shirt and will likely be handed minutes against the Championship side on Wednesday. And where he plays will provide a hint as to how Ten Hag envisages the 24-year-old’s role moving into the new season.

Mount's versatility was one of the plus points United identified in bringing the England international to the club, with the midfielder able to play off the front, as a box-to-box player or out wide. Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate has also suggested he could fulfil a deep-lying position.
