Erik ten Hag's stance on selling Manchester United star Paul Scholes claims let the manager down

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is facing a dilemma over the future of Scott McTominay at Old Trafford.

The Scottish midfielder has become a polarising figure among fans and club legends alike, with Roy Keane and Paul Scholes in particular having their issues with his performance. McTominay's future is uncertain, as United are understood to have recently rejected early bids for his services. Ten Hag has expressed his desire to retain the homegrown talent, who notched up 10 goals and three assists last season.

Yet, with United still to bolster their midfield, which was frequently criticised last season, there is a feeling the club may need to sell before they can buy, particularly after splashing out close to £95m on Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee. Considering Scholes' previous views on McTominay's performances, particularly when he was playing with Fred in the midfield, he may be happy to see the back of the Scot.

Scholes was notably critical of the midfield partnership, which became known as 'McFred' amongst United supporters. After United's 4-0 defeat to Brentford early in Ten Hag's tenure, Scholes said: "With Fred and McTominay, he [Ten Hag] is going to have to go with just one of them.

"But, even one of them is probably too many. Fred gives the ball away all the time and McTominay is trying to run with the ball constantly and then gives it away. Pass it to your best players! It's not that difficult. It's criminal on a day like today."
