Erik ten Hag might already know the answer to Manchester United's Luke Shaw problem

Manchester United will be without Luke Shaw for the foreseeable future after it was announced that the left-back suffered a muscle injury in last Sunday's 2-1 win over Luton Town.

The England international, 28, was forced off in the closing stages of the first half at Kenilworth Road and headed straight down the tunnel. He had passed a fitness test in the build-up to the game after being forced off in the win over Aston Villa seven days earlier.

United issued a statement on Wednesday evening, confirming he faces an 'extended period' on the sidelines and that 'further assessment is still needed to determine the severity' of the injury. The club added that they expect him to be absent for a 'few months'.

This will mark Shaw's second long-term spell on the sidelines this season after he suffered a muscle injury back in August. That period of absence saw him sidelined between mid-August and late-November.

As a result of that injury, United, who were already without fellow left-back Tyrell Malacia at the time, had to dip into the market and borrow Sergio Reguilon on a short-term loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur. He returned to London in January and has since been sent out on loan again, joining Brentford.

This time, of course, United cannot dip into the transfer window as it is not currently open, meaning they find themselves in a difficult position. Malacia is still unavailable after undergoing knee surgery last summer and youngster Alvaro Fernandez was sent out on loan last month, joining Benfica.
