Erik ten Hag insists on attending third Manchester United youngster's contract signing

Erik ten Hag insisted on attending Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer's signing ceremony as he agreed a new contract with the club.

Collyer signed a new deal until 2027, with the option of an additional year, on Thursday after his involvement with the first team last season.

A club source said Ten Hag "really likes" Collyer, whose personality and professionalism have impressed staff at United. United academy head Nick Cox and academy coach Travis Binnion also flanked Collyer for his signing pictures.

The 20-year-old midfielder is yet to make his debut but Collyer was named as a substitute eight times by Ten Hag. He started in the academy's pre-season defeat to Wrexham that Ten Hag was present for last July.

Ten Hag previously attended a 17-year-old Kobbie Mainoo's signing ceremony in February 2023 and the 18-year-old Alejandro Garnacho's renewal in April last year.

Mainoo had only played twice for United at the time but Garnacho was an established first team squad member, having made 31 appearances.

United have not renegotiated a new contract for any senior players since Marcus Rashford inked a five-year deal a year ago. Joe Hugill, also yet to make his senior bow for the club, agreed new terms as part of his loan move to Burton Albion in January.

Collyer has been training with the United first team this week and is expected to be named in their pre-season tour squad of the United States amid the absence of international players on duty at the European Championship and Copa America.

United signed Collyer from the Brighton academy in 2022 and he trained under Ten Hag in September 2022.
