Erik ten Hag has been given another reminder of the Manchester United solution he's yet to try

It's another international break and that means Manchester United fans are pondering how Erik ten Hag can get more from Scott McTominay.

The midfielder has been in sensational form for Scotland but remains a peripheral figure at Old Trafford. United considered a sale in the transfer window but the 26-year-old stayed put despite interest from West Ham United.

Scotland have made a magnificent start to their qualifying campaign with five wins from as many games, leaving Spain in their wake. The 3-0 win over Cyprus on Friday night further extended their fine form.

McTominay got the ball rolling in the first half with what is already his sixth goal in the qualifying games. United could do with similar input from midfield.

“The manager gives me a lot of freedom to get into the box and potentially make things happen," McTominay said in his post-match reflections. “Obviously he has shown a lot of faith in me and I just want to make things happen.”

With Mason Mount injured, perhaps McTominay could be the solution Ten Hag's been looking for in midfield. Not only does the 26-year-old have the physical attributes to play as a box-to-box midfielder but he can also arrive and score goals.

Despite his lack of game time at club level, Scotland manager Steve Clarke has always held McTominay in high regard.

"I've had one or two conversations with Scott already about how the season might pan out. It's similar to Kieran [Tierney] last year," said Clarke.
