Erik ten Hag hails Bruno Fernandes vs Fulham as Manchester United captain sends warning

Manchester United will hope Bruno Fernandes’ 91st-minute winner against Fulham will be enough to spark a resurrection of the club’s season.

The visitors did not play fluently at Craven Cottage by any means, but the Reds claimed a much-needed win. Fernandes has faced criticism over his role as captain after losses to Manchester City and Newcastle.

Erik ten Hag reiterated his support for the midfielder as skipper, calling him an “example” to the rest of the squad. Meanwhile, Fernandes has urged his United teammates to kick on and build on the result.

Ten Hag lauded Fernandes as an "example" to United players after his match-winning goal against Fulham.

Fernandes scored the only goal of the game at Craven Cottage in the 91st minute to end a rotten run of two consecutive 3-0 defeats for United.

In the wake of the Manchester derby defeat to City last week, United legend Roy Keane criticised Fernandes's captaincy and recommended he be stripped of it.

Fernandes has warned United must use their win against Fulham as the springboard for more positive results, following wasted opportunities to kick on after earlier victories this season.

The pressure was mounting on Erik ten Hag's position after successive 3-0 home defeats at home against City and Newcastle, which made this weekend's clash at Craven Cottage a must-win fixture.

But the contest was a scrappy affair and with the exception of Scott McTominay's disallowed goal, chances were at a premium.
