Erik ten Hag gives update on Manchester United striker search in transfer window

Erik ten Hag insists Manchester United are doing "everything in our power" to sign a new striker.

United have bought midfielder Mason Mount and goalkeeper Andre Onana for £98.79million but Ten Hag has repeatedly stressed the need to recruit a new No.9.

The injury-prone Anthony Martial has not participated in team training so far in pre-season as he recovers from a hamstring tear and he sustained six separate injuries last season. United did not buy Wout Weghorst after he scraped two goals in 31 appearances during his loan spell.

Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund is Ten Hag's principal target and the United manager held video calls with the 20-year-old last season. United football director John Murtough has also held extensive discussions with Atalanta.

"Across Man United, a lot of people, we do everything that's in our power to get the right man in," Ten Hag said. "Transfer market, you nerve know, but we know our targets and we do everything we can. We put every effort in to get this done because it's an area where we need improvement."

Ten Hag declined to comment on why United have not moved for Harry Kane, who is out of contract at Tottenham next year and also challenged the forwards to improve their goalscoring numbers next season.

Marcus Rashford claimed 30 goals but United's next highest scorer was Bruno Fernandes on 14 and no other player broke double figures.

"I don't go into talk about specific players who are under contract at another club," Ten Hag added of Kane. "We proved also last season we can be very successful even though we didn't have too many strikers and we still proved we were successful.
