Erik ten Hag explains Joshua Zirkzee decision for Manchester United vs Man City

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has said Joshua Zirkzee will need time to adjust to his new surroundings after being named among the substitutes for Saturday's Community Shield clash with Manchester City at Wembley.

Zirkzee became United's first signing of the summer last month, joining the club from Italian outfit Bologna. He was drafted in to strengthen United's attack, following the exit of Anthony Martial who was released at the end of last season.

The forward was a late addition to the club's pre-season preparations after jetting off on holiday after representing the Netherlands at the European Championship during the summer. He was not involved in any of United's five pre-season friendlies.

Having lost Rasmus Hojlund to a hamstring injury in the opening game of the US pre-season tour against Arsenal, it was anticipated that United's new addition could make his bow as a starter at Wembley. However, Ten Hag has decided to name him on the bench.

Explaining why he has made that decision, Ten Hag, speaking to MUTV ahead of kick-off, said: "There are many games to play. He needs time. Every player at a new club, not only at Manchester United or only when you come to the Premier League, everyone needs time.

"We have to be patient and we have to bring him carefully [into the team] and then he will adjust. I am sure he will contribute a lot."
