Erik ten Hag could be about to finally unleash his dream first choice XI at Manchester United

Manchester United will hope 2024 brings a fresh start after a mediocre end to the past 12 months.

In a 2023 of two halves, the Reds secured a top four spot and a trophy last season but their campaign so far has failed to live up to expectations. Erik ten Hag's side saw their Carabao Cup defence and European campaign end before Christmas and they are off the pace in the Premier League.

The confirmed investment from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Ineos group could help shape a brighter future even if it won't change all of United's issues. One mitigating circumstance Ten Hag can point to is injuries, with his side having been hampered by key absentees all season.

The latter looks to have leapfrogged Raphael Varane in the pecking order at the back with the Frenchman, and fellow former Real Madrid man Casemiro, two players United will listen to offers for this month.

The Brazilian has been short of the standards set last term and Ten Hag has unleashed young prospect Kobbie Mainoo in recent weeks with the teenager looking set for a bright future. Summer signing Mason Mount, a player Ten Hag rates highly, will also be back to full fitness this month and together Mainoo and Fernandes could help bring the blend of stability and creativity to the midfield.
