Enyimba may seal Champions League spot today as Rivers, Insurance in season-defining clash

Enyimba

The picture is becoming clearer at the ongoing Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) Championship Play-off, which enters matchday four at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, today.

Already, former champions, Enyimba of Aba, are assured of at least a CAF Confederation Cup ticket from the competition, but they could earn a Champions League slot if they beat Sunshine Stars of Akure today.

Theirs is the last game of a day, which will start with a clash between Bendel Insurance and Rivers United that has so many things riding on it.

Enyimba have five points from three games and will rise to eight points if they beat Sunshine Stars that have not been too impressive in this competition.

Rivers United will also move to eight points with a win, but that means that Insurance, who ran through the regular season without a loss, could miss out of the race for a continental ticket.

Insurance are on three points from three draws and need a win to be sure of remaining in the calculation for a continental ticket.

Defeat for Rivers United means they must win their last game against Enyimba to retain hopes of a CAF Champions League slot.

The second game of the day is between Remo Stars and Lobi Stars with both teams needing victory to remain in contention for a top three finish.

Remo Stars have three points to Lobi’s two and will rise to six points with a win. Lobi Stars will move to five points with a victory that could galvanise them into their must-win battle with Sunshine Stars on Sunday.

Anything short of victory today will almost certainly be the end of the road for both Lobi Stars and Sunshine Stars.
