Eight players could miss Manchester United's Carabao Cup tie vs Barnsley

Manchester United open up their Carabao Cup charge on Tuesday night when they take on Barnsley.

United enter the EFL competition at the third round stage due to their Europa League qualification this season. The cup holds a special place in Erik ten Hag's heart after winning the trophy in his first season at the Theatre of Dreams.

Unfortunately, the retention of the Carabao Cup last season fell flat. After beating Crystal Palace in the third round 3-0, they were then humbled in the last-16 by Newcastle United - who United beat in the 2023 showpiece.

If United are going to make it to the next round of the competition, they will have to do so without a handful of players at Old Trafford. Luke Shaw continues to progress, but Ten Hag said the Tuesday night game (8pm) would come too soon for the England regular - who played at Euro 2024 this summer.

Victor Lindelof's toe injury is continuing to keep him side-lined, and Rasmus Hojlund is in the same boat as Shaw in terms of an eventual return date. Mason Mount picked up an injury prior to the heavy loss against Liverpool and he remains side-lined for this fixture, albeit his return should be sooner rather than later.

Tyrell Malacia and Leny Yoro remain the only long-term injuries in the squad. It is expected Malacia ought to be back in October, while Yoro is set to return to the group in either November or December.
