Eddie Howe admits mixed feelings as Newcastle send Burnley down; gives Joelinton update

Eddie Howe praised the way his Newcastle players went about their business in the final game but admitted his sadness at seeing Burnley relegated.

The Magpies had long secured their top-flight survival before arriving at Turf Moor. However, the Clarets needed to match Leeds United’s result to avoid the drop. But, a 2-1 loss coupled with Leeds 2-1 triumph over Brentford, means Mike Jackson’s side will play in the Championship next term.

Callum Wilson gave Newcastle the lead on 20 minutes from the penalty spot. And the England striker doubled the advantage on the hour mark.

Maxwel Cornet pulled one back on 69 minutes but they could not find the two goals required to stay afloat. Howe is a former Burnley player and manager.

And the 44-year-old confessed that seeing his side take all the points to condemn the Clarets to the drop was a double-edged sword.

“I have massive sympathy for them. It’s a crushing feeling,” he told Sky Sports. “My thoughts are with everyone connected at Burnley. I loved my time here and have a lot of affection for this club.

“We had a job to do and I am very proud of my team.”

Newcastle finished in 11th spot in the Premier League table after a superb second half of the season. Seemingly dead and buried at the turn of the year, they rallied under Howe and with a few additions in January.
