Ebbsfleet United manager Josh Wright reacts to 3-1 defeat at home to Weston-super-Mare in National League South

Ebbsfleet boss Josh Wright admitted his team got exactly what they deserved on Saturday.

The Fleet lost 3-1 at home to fellow National League South play-off contenders Weston-super-Mare.

The manner of the defeat – Ebbsfleet shipped three goals in 16 second-half minutes – meant Wright didn’t hold back in a damning assessment of his players.

“We were absolutely nowhere near it, and I'll be brutally honest with my assessment,” stated the Fleet boss.

“I thought we were quite fortunate to go in at 1-0 at half-time. I didn't think either side played that well.

“They changed their shape, and it's a credit to their manager and them as a team, because I thought they had something about them that causes problems.

“But the bare minimum that you want out of your side is what we showed on Tuesday night (at Maidenhead). Hard-running, hard work, the basics, competing, landing on first, second, third contact, whatever it might be, and matching what opponents give you.

“They looked to me (as if) they wanted it more. They had more hunger, they had more running, they had more endeavour about them, and we got what we deserved.

“Honestly, we got what we deserved today. I thought the second half, we were really poor.”

After hailing the midweek victory at Maidenhead as one of the Fleet’s best performances of the season, the Weston defeat was the opposite.

“It's the worst we've been by a long way, especially at home,” added Wright. “I'm really disappointed because I didn't see that performance coming whatsoever after the other night.

“I thought most looked leggy, they lacked energy in terms of ourselves. I'm not sure why, so I could have made more changes, but you look at that performance the other night, and you sort of want to roll again.
