Ebbsfleet’s Ben Chapman believes he’s playing his best-ever football.
The Fleet midfielder has been used in a more attacking role this season.
It’s one thing to be higher up the pitch, but it’s another thing to deliver the goods.
Chapman’s double over the Easter weekend took his goals tally for the season to nine - an indication that he’s revelling in the faith placed in him by Fleet boss Josh Wright.
Asked if he’s playing his best football, Chapman replied: “Potentially, yeah, probably.
“In terms of stats-wise, probably. In terms of putting the ball in the back of the net, assists, stuff like that, yes.
“But, like I’ve said before, this is the first time I've played in a more advanced position. Now I'm in that more advanced area, my job is to score goals or create goals.
“It means it’s a slightly different stat. In terms of putting the ball in the back of the net and getting forward, it's definitely one of my best seasons so far.”
Chapman certainly enjoys the extra attention that goal involvement brings.
“Exactly that,” he smiled. “That's what people care about, scoring goals.
“They don't care about you keeping it out of the back of the net. People want to see you score goals.
“I'd say since I've been here, I've loved every single season. We've had some tough times, losing the play-off final and relegation last season. But as a place, everyone around it is like a second home to me.
“Now that I'm in advanced areas, playing and scoring goals, I'm really starting to enjoy it this year.”
The good news for Chapman - and Fleet fans - is that he’s just approaching what is regarded as his peak years as a footballer.
