Ebbsfleet United manager Josh Wright on goalkeepers Matt Hall and on-loan Watford man Jonathan Macaulay, plus former Gillingham defender Max Ehmer nears return from injury

Ebbsfleet manager Josh Wright has explained why he fielded his fourth different goalkeeper of the season on Saturday.

The Fleet started the campaign with the experienced Mark Cousins between the sticks but he lost his place to Gio Bellagambi.

A serious leg injury to Bellagambi saw on-loan Watford stopper Jonathan Macaulay come into the Fleet side but new signing Matt Hall took over for Saturday’s National League South win over Chesham.

“Jono's done really well,” stressed Wright. “I'd love him to stay and I'll go on record saying that I'd love to extend (his loan).

“He's a great kid, great character and personality, and he's been really good for us. He came in to challenge Gio, and nothing's changed with that part (to challenge).

“But I've signed Matt as a permanent goalkeeper and he's got the number one shirt. He is the replacement to Mark Cousins (who retired to take up a coaching role in Ipswich’s academy) and Gio with the sad injury that he's got.

“I want two number ones and I wanted to have a good look at Matt on Saturday. I had full faith in him, he trained fantastically on Wednesday.

“Sometimes you just tweak one or two things when you've had a defeat, whether you've played well or not, which we did, and that was my choice.

“Matt's come in and I've got two really good goalkeepers now. I wanted that from the start of the season, I want two number ones to push each other and that’s what they’ll do.

“It's down to them to grab hold of the shirt, perform well and stay in the team.”

Former Southampton and Bristol Rovers keeper Hall played against Ebbsfleet only a few weeks ago for AFC Totton.

Many felt it was that performance which ignited the Fleet’s interest but Wright was well aware of his capabilities before then.
