Ebbsfleet United manager Josh Wright reflects on 2-0 win at Hampton & Richmond Borough in National League South

Ebbsfleet boss Josh Wright admitted his side were far from their best against Hampton on Saturday.

The Fleet needed late goals from substitutes Ben Chapman and Finlay Barnes to grab all three points in National League South – and move into the top half of the table for the first time this season.

While it was far from a polished display from Wright’s men, the Fleet boss knows winning scrappy games like that will go a long way to achieving their aims this season.

“We've played some games this season where we've been fantastic,” said Wright. “We've played some games this season once or twice now where we may not have been at our best, a little bit like this week but they've found a way.

“That shows character and personality, what you need to win football games. In any aspect of any sport, you won't always be at your best. There'll always be an off day.

“There'll always be moments where you can't just click, it won't just fall for you. You can't just land on something or you're a little bit off the pace for whatever reason.

“But you have to find a way. Like in life, when life's against you and it becomes tough, you have to find a way.

“That's what this football club's done. That's what this team's shown, with a lot of good football, by the way, and with a lot of good chances and creativity and options and moments.

“If we can keep gelling those together, keep going in the right direction with all of that, I'm sure we'll be in a good place and we can keep trying to push forward as a football club.”

Wright opted for a change of formation. It didn’t seem to work with lots of their approach work too narrow.
