East Lancs Road closure LIVE as woman killed after being hit by car - latest updates

A stretch of a major road near Wigan is closed this morning following a fatal collision.

According to traffic alert service Inrix, the East Lancashire Road - the A580 - is currently closed on a stretch between Lowton and Golborne. It is shut between the A572 Newton Road and Stone Cross Lane North.

In a statement released this morning, GMP said a woman believed to be in her 30s had died after being hit by a car in the early hours of this morning (March 25).

A 31-year-old man has been arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody.

Heavy traffic is building in the surrounding areas due to the closure of the road, which links Salford to Liverpool. GMP Traffic said the road was shut due to an 'ongoing investigation'.

A post on X said: "Due to a ongoing investigation into a road traffic collision, the following road closures are in place. East Lancs Road A580 westbound junction with Newton road.

"Haydock island eastbound onto A580 East Lancs road as you access from the M6 . Please plan your journey @NWmwaypolice."
