East Kilbride boxer David Jamieson has Commonwealth title in his sights

East Kilbride boxer David Jamieson has set his sights on the Commonwealth cruiserweight title, having got himself back on the fringes of the UK top 10 with a winning return to the ring.

Jamieson says he “put some demons to bed” as he stopped Greek fighter Konstantinos-Alexios Vergetis in the sixth round, in his first fight back since breaking his jaw against Mikael Lawal last November.

Jamieson, 31, was in dominant form to beat Vergetis at Sam Kynoch’s Braveheart night in Glasgow’s Doubletree by Hilton on Friday night.

And he says Commonwealth and European champion Chris Billam-Smith is about to give up the former of those belts as he targets a world title shot, which could put Jamieson in the driving seat.

Jamieson said: “That’s me sitting back at the fringe of the top 10 in Britain, sort of 11th, so we’re looking to push back into title contention.

“It would be massive, that’s what it’s all about.

“I believe the Commonwealth title will be becoming available when Chris Billam-Smith relinquishes it, so I think we will be a front-runner for that.

“That would be massive, just the same sort as the British title. It’s a massive step in the right direction and a proper, recognised title.

“It’s a proper route, your British, Commonwealth, European – that’s the route we’re looking to go.”

Jamieson admits the fight may have been considered ‘a bit soon’ after the jaw-break, but he had things to prove to himself.

He added: “It was good to get back with a win. To be honest, there were a lot of demons to put to bed in my head, in the preparations for this one, and during the fight with how the jaw was going to be, and things like that.

“But I ticked all the boxes in my head and we got another stoppage win at the end of the sixth
