Union Saint Gilloise learn their Rangers lessons as star declares 'we won't be doing THAT again' in Berlin showdown

Union Saint-Gilloise won't be making the same mistakes as they did against Rangers when they face Union Berlin for a place in the Europa League quarter-finals.

That's the view of midfielder Teddy Teuma who insists "defending at all costs" was their downfall when they crashed out at Ibrox. The Belgian side dealt Gio van Bronckhorst's team a shock back in August when they won the first leg 2-0, with Teuma striking the opener to leave Gers with an uphill battle in the second leg. But it was a different story in Glasgow as James Tavernier, Antonio Colak and Malik Tillman shot them down.

The Belgians have recovered though and after a 3-3 draw with Berlin in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 clash, they have a home leg shootout with a chance of making the last eight. And Teuma insists they'll be going out to win this one rather than setting out to defend.

He said: "It's the first time that we haven't won in the first leg and that we've played the return home. We therefore face a different situation than in the past.

"Finally, we can say to ourselves that it is not so bad not to have won on the first leg, because we will play the return to win it and not to try to maintain a certain lead. We will not have in mind the idea of defending a result at all costs as against Rangers and against Antwerp."

Meanwhile journalist Swann Borsellino reckons that defeat at Ibrox still rankles although he insists USG are a better team now than they were then. He added: "We must clear the heads of the defeat against Rangers, because the context was not the same. It was an elimination in the Champions League in a mythical place of football. And on a European scale, the Union hasn't been the same team since then."
