Dylan Levitt sounds Hibs Euro warning as new recruit Dundee United horror show his 'worst night in football'

Europe was a major reason for Dylan Levitt choosing Hibs as his next destination - even though it delivered the worst night of his career 12 months ago.

The midfielder has joined up with his new team mates at their Marbella pre-season camp after sealing a £300,000 move from Dundee United. And he arrived with a warning that continental football can make or break a season. Unfortunately for the Wales international it was the latter last season as Dundee United tossed away a 1-0 first leg lead over AZ Alkmaar and were thrashed 7-0 in the Conference League qualifying second leg in Holland.

The shockwaves of that humbling led to a seven game winless run that included a 9-0 Tannadice torching from Celtic and the sacking of Jack Ross. Levitt shudders at the memory and admits the mare in Alkmaar started the rot for the relegated Terrors. But he reckons it could also have the opposite effect if Hibs can hit the ground running in their second qualifying round clash against either Faroese outfit Vikingur or Andorrans Inter Club d’Escaldes later this month.

Levitt said: “I had Europe last year and that was something I looked straight at when I came here. If you can do well it’s a massive bonus going into the start of the league season.

“The first game comes round so fast and the second comes even faster, you can’t take anything for granted. Having been in that position before, I’ve learned a lot.

“That was one of the worst nights I have had in football. As a footballer you have to try and put it behind you and move on.

“No-one said a word in the dressing room after the game, no-one said a word on the flight home. We were back in the next day and it was so quiet. I have never been involved in anything like that.
