DWP minister gives update as Waspi campaigners call for compensation

The Work and Pensions Secretary has delivered an update today on issues surrounding communication over pension age changes.

Mel Stride's appearance in the House of Commons comes in the backdrop of Women Against State Pension Inequality (Waspi) campaigners calling for compensation after a report found that some women were not properly notified of a change in the state pension age. The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO), which had investigated the issue for five years, said women were left out of pocket due to the issue.

The government is yet to confirm whether there will be any payouts or compensation for the women affected. Mr Stride delivered a statement to the House of Commons today (March 25) where he acknowledged the ombudsman's report.

Mr Stride said: “We continue to take the work of the ombudsman very seriously and it is only right that we now fully and properly consider the findings and the details of what is a substantial document.

“The ombudsman has noted in his report the challenges and the complexities of this issue. In laying the report before Parliament, the ombudsman has brought matters to the attention of the House and we will provide a further update to the House once we have considered the report’s findings.”

He added: “This Government has a strong track record of supporting all pensioners. In 2023-24 we will spend over £151 billion on support for pensioners. That is 5.5% of GDP.

“That includes around £124 billion for the state pension. We are committed to ensuring the state pension remains the foundation of income in retirement now and for future generations.”
