Dwight Yorke details ‘serious issue’ with Manchester United after chat with Frenkie de Jong

Manchester United icon Dwight Yorke has revealed he spoke to Frenkie de Jong amid the club’s interest in the midfielder.

The former striker is gearing up for his first managerial job in Australia as he takes charge of Macarthur FC. Back in May, he managed the A-League all-stars in a friendly against Barcelona, when United’s interest in De Jong was ramping up.

Yorke said he had spoken to the player at the game. Three months after negotiations first started, however De Jong looks no closer to an Old Trafford switch despite the clubs having agreed a deal in principle.

The 1999 Treble hero explained how the lack of Champions League football at Old Trafford is making it hard for his former club to attract their targets. He suggested that, despite ongoing wage disputes, Barcelona’s offer of top European football is very much a factor in De Jong's preference to stay at the Nou Camp.

He told www.safebettingsites.com: “I had a conversation with Frenkie De Jong at the All Star game, and you know before that would’ve been a done deal (De Jong to United). And you look at his circumstances where he’s playing with a massive club and even though the money is an issue he has the opportunity to play Champions League football there.

“The players we are chasing are in such powerful positions it’s very difficult to lure them away to come to United. The club have kicked themselves in the teeth and can’t attract the best players any more, no Champions League football is a serious issue and it’s getting more and more difficult by the year.”
