Dunhill Links goes ahead after monsoon conditions wash out golf courses but only St Andrews will be open to spectators

The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship will amazingly go ahead today after the three host courses were submerged in floods over the weekend.

The tournament was severely at risk of being cancelled with St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns under water following torrential downpours. Matt Fitzpatrick will tee it up again as he bids to land the £816,000 top prize, with the Ryder Cup star leading on 13 under par – one shot ahead of Scotland’s Grant Forrest and Spaniard Nacho Elvira. The greenstaff over the three courses have been credited for getting the golf back on – just as it looked the whole event would have to be scrubbed.

However, only St Andrews will allow spectators on to the Old Course with conditions still believed to be dangerous at Kingsbarns and Carnoustie. The biggest problems yesterday lay at the latter, where the famous Barry Burn was understood to be close to bursting its banks. Play was unaffacted on the opening round on Thursday while Friday also went ahead but there was no golf on the Saturday and Sunday, when Bob MacIntyre had to make do with going in a hot tub rather than taking to the links.
